Overview: Many students will be the first in their family to either attend college or complete college. Such students may experience greater anxiety than other students while experiencing less parental support due to their parents’ lack of knowledge regarding the college admissions and financial aid processes. Such students may have also attend high schools offering less guidance or academic preparation for college. Beyond the lack of support, first generation students are typically unaware of the many college transition programs and scholarship opportunities specifically developed to support the college success of first generation students. Being a ‘First-Gen’ is a significant intangible in a student’s college admissions and scholarship consideration by a broad range of institutions.
